Widely remembered as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Jimi Hendrix explored the explosive possibilities of the electric guitar. Jimi inspired others with his flashy clothes and his intense stage presence. At Woodstock, Hendrix played "The Star Spangled Banner and astonished all who were there. Hendrix and his music have continued to be an inspiration to many, including Kirk Hammett, lead guitarist for Metallica. Kirk once said, "After months of playing air guitar to 'Free Bird', what really got me into guitar was watching a documentary about Jimi Hendrix and picking up the Woodstock soundtrack. Listening to his version of 'Star Spangled Banner' and 'Purple Haze.' My brother played acoustic guitar and, idolising him, I thought, 'I'm going to get a guitar. Hendrix started to play guitar when his father bought him an second hand acoustic guitar. Soon after Hendrix joined his first band, The Velvetones. He then left for the Rocking Kings, and also bought his first electric guitar. In 1961 Hendrix enrolled in the United States Army; he was apart of the Screaming Eagles (Blue, APM). After two years, he was discharged because of an injury due to a parachute jump and he was sent home. In 1966, Chas Chandler, a musician, talent scout and soon to be Hendrix's manager, saw one of Hendrix's performances and was impressed. He offered him a contract to go to London and play in a new band. As this was a big contract, Hendrix gladly accepted. Chandler first order of business was to change Hendrix's first name from Jimmy to Jimi. Quickly the Hendrix Experience came together with Mitch Michelle on drums and Noel Redding on the bass. It did not take long before they became a sensation in England in the fall of 1966 ( Rock and Roll, APM).
