"One half of the world does not know how the other half lives" (Riis 1890). This quote, said by Jacob Riis, explains so much of what was happening during the Industrial Revolution. Between child labor, cruel and hard labor, classes, and Marxism, the world was becoming a different place. People were separated by further jumps then ever before, and workers were needed to just get buy. The Industrial Revolution brought upon many different things, but three major ones are what defined an era. Those three things were, conditions that workers experienced and child labor, the living conditions at this time, and what Karl Marx observed. "When the Industrial Revolution of the nineteenth century brought a rapid increase in wealth, the demand of workers for a fair share of the wealth they were creating was conceded only after riots and strikes, (Orr n.d.). The demand of workers was incredible, as the Industrial Revolution took off. Why did it begin? New technology of course. The invention of the steam engine, Flying Shuttle Loom, the Spinning Jenny, and many other things. With these things, began factories, which employed hundreds to thousands of people in the country. What is a factory system? It is unskilled labor, and power driven machinery that is under one roof. Workers though, were not treated as they are today. They were paid on a fixed scale, and under tight discipline. The condones of these factories, changed how people worked. The worked in dark, crowded places, for 12 to 16 hours at a time, if late to work, the bosses would lock them out, with no wages. On top of these, they were inflexible, high accident rates, and filthy. Skilled workers were replaced with unskilled workers to save money in the factory. On top of this, women and children worked for lower wages then men. These conditions expanded, those who were hurt on the job, were immediately replaced for someone who could do the job better and faster.
