During our everyday life, we may not realize the various Englishes we use. When I say Englishes, I am referring to the styles in which English is spoken. You may be wondering, How many types of English can one even speak? Youd be surprised. For example, a style of English most people are familiar with is broken English. This is usually spoken by foreigners who are unfamiliar with the English language. With the rising number of nationalities and cultures we have in the United States, you can expect the English language to be changing a little as well. In the essay Mother Tongue by Amy Tan, a writer whos very fond of language, discusses her personal experiences with English growing up as an Asian-American. Since she was born, Tan has grown accustom to her mothers form of English. Broken English is mostly spoken by foreigners, which incorporates sentence fragments and weak grammar. The quotation above shows an example of this English spoken by Tans mother. When reading this excerpt you may notice many grammatical errors and some missing words. However, one who speaks broken English may argue that it gets to the point a lot faster than if you were to be speaking proper English. People may notice their difference in speech while amongst friends. Like most people, I find myself using a lot more slang with friends than Id use in a class discussion, making a speech or speaking to a professor. This style of English can be described as a more relaxed, free form of speech. For example, someone using slang may say How you like my new ride? which could be translated into How do you like my new car? The speaker will tell you both sentences mean the same thing, however someone who is unfamiliar with this form of slang may just look at you with confusion.
