Power causes a lot of problems, and it is tempting to think of power as being evil. Power is what everybody wants. We all want the power to make people do things or to get things done. Everything we hear is the pursuit of power. We have gone through horrible wars because of the desire to dominate another country. Power is so liable to abuse. In my opinion, power is dangerous because it plays a role in turning people evil. First of all, people can become evil because they are blind to authority. The Milgram studies determine evil as the willingness of people to blindly obey authority. All the people that went all the way to 450 volt were ordinary people randomly chosen to do the test but what makes them go wrong? Those people were told that it was ok to do so and that they will not be responsible. The same obedience can be observed through the mass suicide committed by 912 Americans because they blindly followed Pastor Jim Jones. He had the ultimate power because they believed that he represented God and was sent by Him. With the power to persuade, he told them to commit suicide together and they just followed him blindly. Some of them even killed their own children or a member of their family because they over trusted the Pastor. Therefor power is evil because it makes people commit immoral behaviors due to ignorance and selfishness. Furthermore, if we give power in a situation without surveillance, we can create the perfect evil. At the Abu Ghraib Prison, the guard was given the power to interrogate the prisoners without limits. At first, those soldiers have good intentions and the desire to protect the country. What made them do horrible things? It is because they knew that nobody was ever going to come down to the dungeon. There was no surveillance, therefore no accountability. In addition, I believe that when we have power over a person, we can eventually become evil on a regular basis.
