Science fiction has been around as early as the 19th century, this is one of the many reason’s why there are a variety of different views on Science Fiction. One view on science fiction is that “Science fiction is the branch of literature that deals with the effects of change on people in the real world as it can be projected into the past, the future, or to distant places. It often concerns itself with scientific or technological change, and it usually involves matters whose importance is greater than the individual or the community; often civilization or the race itself is in danger.” (-James E. Gunn) The advantages to this definition would be that science fiction is related to the real world. Many people think that science fiction is only a made up story, when in reality many parts of science fiction are made up of real would experiences just transformed into a story by the author. Another definition of science fiction is “Science fiction is the search for a definition of mankind and his status in the universe which will stand in our advanced but confused state of knowledge (science), and is characteristically cast in the Gothic or post Gothic mode.” (-Brian W. Aldiss) I agree with the first part of this definition because life is all about finding yourself and who you are. You have to go through many obstacles to become your true self and you have to learn to reflect on every lesson you go through in life. As for the second part of the definition I think it is to dark for a science fiction definition. Don't get me wrong; there can be dark science fiction stories but not all science fiction movies or stories have to be dark and gothic.
