In the short stories "Shining Houses written by Alice Munro and "Magpies by Thomas King, similarities between each story begin to show connecting with characters and also many themes, from stubbornness to originality characters experience the world around them changing before their own eyes. In Shining Houses an elderly woman known as Mrs. Fullerton has been living a monotonous life for over 40 years and happens to be the oldest member in the community. She has raised her children and has been living peacefully since day one, but everything around her seems to be changing faster then she thought. In the new subdivision knows as "The Garden Place , many young families are beginning their lives in new shining houses "The bathrooms were beautiful, with three-part mirrors, ceramic tiles, and coloured plumbing. (Munro,67) but many of these young families begin to notice a disturbance in the scenery of the community. Mrs.Fullerton's house wasn't the most updated, or the prettiest on the block, her shingles had been worn out because of weather over the years and she didn't take care of her yard as much as she used to in her younger years but to Mrs. Fullerton it had more sentimental value then any of the new shining houses that were being built. Mrs.Fullerton who might not be the most charming old woman, begins to feel outdated in her own community, as she sees all these new families beginning their lives she starts to feel as if her own is coming to an end. Near the beginning of the story Mrs. Fullerton was selling eggs outside of her house as she has a chicken coop in her backyard along with many other farm like animals, this represented as her unwillingness to confirm to the evolving society around her, such as the younger generation represents expensive, new ways like going to a grocery store instead of fresh produce, as said by a character in the story "I'm going to stop buying them, the supermarket is cheaper and who care
