Urbanization and the Future of Rural Areas

The issue of urban growth and decline of the countryside has become a very popular phenomenon in our world. It is an important issue because urbanization may affect on people who live in rural areas. A variety of different claims has been put forward about this problem. This essay will consider arguments for positive sides of urbanization and point to some of the problems with these views. It will then propose a number of reasons why urbanization harms the countryside. One positive side of urbanization is better life conditions. Life in the city is entering a qualitatively new level, becoming more comfortable and convenient, more secure and healthy. It is known that there is higher life expectancy and lower infant mortality in the cities. “The study confirmed the prevalence of infant mortality in rural areas of children under 1 year in urban areas” (Siberian Medical Journal, 2011, p. 171). Also, qualified medical care is provided better than in rural areas. “City is a symbol of possibilities” (Lewis Mumford, 1956). A city has more job and studying opportunities. Many people move to the urban areas to get a decent education and professional development, some people are simply looking for a job. Nearly all of them always find needed. Nevertheless, cities have possibility to earn more. “Half the global population now living in urban areas” (“Antropocene Journal”, March 29, 2012). And these people account for 70% of global domestic product (GDP) Urbanization also has many negative impacts. If all the youth of the country sides have moved to the cities, there are not many people left to do the agricultural works. So producing agricultural products will be decreasing.” The offer of jobs declined significantly, because of rural youth’s point of view, that life in the province is unattractive in socio-cultural way” (Vasile Kantarzhi, 2014).
