Leading the Way to a Bully-Free School

Every day high school students are bullied; there is no discrimination for bullying. Boys and girls alike experience this from ages 14 to 18. This is a problem that high schools fail to recognize. Most schools are aware of bullying, but don't do anything to stop it. What they don't know, is that there are things they could do to stop it. As a high school student, I have witnessed kids at my school be victimized by their fellow students. And I'm sad to admit, that sometime I didn't do anything about it. What may be even more deplorable, is that I'm one of many others who have made the decision to stand idly by as one of my classmates was being bullied. That is not always the case, however. One day during my class, a student who was sitting next to me was being made fun of by a few other boys. The kid they were teasing wasn't a "popular  boy. He didn't have many friends, but he was pretty smart. You could say that he would be a typical bully target. But he had helped me with my Algebra homework a few days earlier. So when I saw them teasing him like that, it bothered me a lot. I knew that he didn't have the self-confidence to stand up for himself. This guy was really nice, and no one should treat him with such disrespect. I made up my mind that something had to be done. And if it had to be me, then so be it. So, I did it. I stoop up and told the guys that were bullying him to shut up. I yelled at them, saying that what they were doing was wrong and they needed to stop. Of course, I didn't put it in such nice of terms. But I had to do what I had to do to make sure they would stop. As soon as they stopped, I felt kind of ¦better about myself. Sure, later on these guys would probably continue to tease him. But seeing this kid's face light up with a glimmer of hope for himself was priceless. I knew I had done the right thing, and I knew that it meant a lot to him. That moment was important to me, and changed the way I react to similar sit
