Jane Austen’s 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice (Attwood, 1996) tells the love story of the Bennets’ five unmarried daughters, especially Elizabeth and eldest daughter Jane. One day wealthy Mr. Bingley moves to Netherfield with his friend Mr. Darcy. Then Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy meet Bennet family at the ball. At the ball they meet each other, then big love story begins. Finally Mr. Bingley proposes to Jane and Mr. Darcy proposes to Elizabeth. The story ends happily. A major theme of the novel is marriage, because marriage was important decision for women and they want to marry rich men. The movie version of Jane Austen’s popular novel Pride & Prejudice was released in November 2005, produced by Tim Bevon, Eric Fellner and Paul Webster directed by Joe Wright adopted for the screen by Deborah Moggach. In this paper I will compare and contrast the way in which one element has been adapted by the moviemakers; in addition, I will compare and contrast the way two movie critics have reviewed the movie. One common element that is in both the book and the movie is the depiction of Elizabeth. Overall, this character is presented similarly. One point of similarity is in her physical appearance. In the book and movie, Elizabeth is described as being beautiful enough and tall. She is young - about 20 years old. Mr. Darcy first sees her in the party and he likes Elizabeth. Another point of similarity is in her personality. In the book Elizabeth is the most intelligent and sensible of the five Bennet sisters. She is described as attractive and witty, but she judges a person from first impression. For example, when Mr. Darcy first came to the ball, she says that he looks proud and careless. But later she understood that he is good man. In comparison, in the movie she is also intelligent, attractive and witty.
