“Struggle is proof that you haven't been conquered, that you refuse to surrender, that victory is still possible, and that you're growing” – Jon Walden The Odyssey shows Odysseus’ struggle with his identity as he starts off as an arrogant ruler and turns into a humble leader. He soon finds his way, through being held captive on islands and battling monsters. Throughout the epic, Odysseus portrays many characteristics about himself, but some, such as, loyalty, confidence and humility, tend to change by the end of the epic. Odysseus portrays many characteristics and traits throughout the epic. One that really stood out was loyalty. Odysseus didn’t start off being the most loyal person. But as the story proceeds, it is clear that Odysseus starts to change his ways. “In the nights, true, he’d sleep with her in the arching cave...” (5. 170-171). On Odysseus’s journey, he becomes stranded in the City of Scheria where he meets the beautiful princess Nausicaa. It just so happens that Nausicaa and Odysseus make love often. Odyseuss has a wife, Penelope, back home in Ithaca. It is easy to see that Odysseus wasn’t very loyal to his beloved wife Penelope at first, while Penelope stayed very loyal to him. Penelope’s loyalty is evident when she is seen uweaving her loom every night because she promised the suitors that once she finished her loom she would marry one of them. ADD QUOTE. As Odysseus’s journey continues on, he starts to change. “‘Circe, now make a good promise you gave me once - it’s time to help me home. My heart longs to be home...’” (10. 532-533). It is even said in the epic that when Odysseus was with Circe, he would always dream of Penelope. This comes to show how he is becoming more loyal to his family and it’s obvious he wants to be back home in Ithaca with Penelope.
