The flood story found in Genesis 6-9, is a myth focusing on the form of punishment inflicted by God onto humankind (the Hebrews) for being evil, as the world was corrupt, and full of their violence2. It can also be seen as a myth with a moral, informing the reader/listener, that they will be saved if they are obedient, righteous3, live with integrity4, and do everything that God commands5, just as Noah did. The story of Noah could arguably also be seen as an aetiological Nature Myth, explaining the creation and occurrence behind the rainbow6. The myth begins with the God of the Hebrews becoming upset with the vast majority of humans, as well as supernatural beings - the Nephilim7 (referred to only as "sons of God" in Genesis, but later referred to as Giants of Canaan8) which bred with the humans (successfully creating anthropomorphic hybrids of some sort, who lived over and above the expected human age of only 120 years9) and roamed the Earth with them. Because of the displeasure he found with their behavior, God decides to wipe off the face of the Earth all humans, domestic and crawling animals, and birds.10 However, God does decide to save one man named Noah, as well as his 3 sons, wife, and his daughters-in-law (for the reasons readily mentioned above)11. God instructs Noah to build an arc12, however the contents of the boat are contradicted throughout Genesis. In Genesis 6:19, God advises Noah to bring a male and female pair of every type of animal (whether they be birds, domesticated or ground crawlers), as well as food for himself and the animals to eat and store. Genesis 7:2 asks Noah to bring seven breeding pairs of each type of clean animal and bird, and only one breeding pair of every type of unclean animal. Unclean animals are saved for reproduction, the clean animals are saved for ritual sacrificial purposes. Once everyone who was deemed to be saved was on board, God sent a flood whose waters covered all the mountains everywhere under the sky.
