December 31, 1999: I was still young, nine years old, but I remember the chaos. Adults never really felt comfortable talking about it to kids, but I was able to overhear much of their worried conversations. They spoke of something called Y2K, and they seemed to be conflicted and confused about was about to happen at the turn of the New Year. I could tell my parents were skeptical, but it didn't stop them from stocking up on batteries and canned goods. I interpreted it as if all technology was going to end. I thought that whatever Y2K was, it was going to revert us back in time. Although wrong, I was close. Y2K was the turn of the millennium, 1999 into 2000. Because the computers built in the 1960's and 1970's were expected to be replaced before the 21st century, they were only programmed to go up to 1999. People therefore assumed the computers would become confused and shut down. This seemed more of a serious issue in nuclear plants because without the control of the computers, anything could happen. So with the shutting down of computers, a nuclear genocide was imagined. Fortunately, nothing of the sort happened. There are continually erroneous predictions of "dooms day." Currently there is extreme curiosity in the 2012 theory that is rapidly approaching. Without knowing much behind, people will often throw out that the world will end in 2012. There was even a movie recently released titled, "2012. But the origin and details of these apocalyptic predictions differ in many ways. Christianity has many views, but there are groups of people who believe the world is coming to an end soon, possibly in 2012. The Mayan religion also has views of the end of the world coming in 2012. The problem is religion is all faith based. It is important to look at what is proven scientifically when determining the end of the world. Astrology has creative and possibly legitimate views on the end of the world occurring in 2012. Exploration of each of each theory is the only way to discover when the world is going to end. Christianity is given a description of the end of the world in their book of the bible. The bible concludes with a book called Revelation, which prophesies the apocalypse, or second coming of Jesus. These details have triggered many to try and predict the date on which these events will occur. In the sixteenth century, mathematician and Catholic monk, Michael Stifel studied the bible along side mathematics in order to decode the bible. Stifel's findings led him to believe that the world would end October 3, 1533. He proclaimed his prophecy and as the day arrived, he and his followers awaited the Lord's arrival. Clearly it did not come as we are well into the 21st century. Others did not learn from his mistakes as the quest to predict the date of the end of the world continued. John Napier came along about half a century after Stifel and also made extreme presumptions. He claimed that the then pope was the antichrist and that Armageddon was predicted
