Human trafficking is an inhumane practice that has been around since the 1400s. It involves the use of a vulnerable human being who is forcefully stripped of their dignity and self worth. It’s a global phenomenon that has affected so many lives over the years and is daunting for many. The victims are usually women, a child or a person with a disadvantage. In the United States, human trafficking has developed because of one’s disability, teenage runaways, individuals who are desperate for money, the porn industry and unjust people; the amounts of these victims are rising, and the U.S. is attempting to cease it. The United States seems to be a better and safer place than most countries, but most people don’t know what is really going on behind the scenes. Human trafficking is one of those things that make the United States imperfect. In a magazine from The University of Virginia Magazine an author named Maura Singleton states, “People think of trafficking happening in places like Thailand, India or Brazil, but no one thinks about it occurring in the U.S. When they do” she continues, “they think of immigrants who are being exploited. But there are also U.S. citizens who are often trafficked. It’s happening in our own backyard.’ ” (Singleton 13) The state South Dakota has the highest number of human traffickers because they are one of the worse states to fight it. The victims of human trafficking are mostly because the person has a disadvantage. A newspaper called The Guardian, states, “In India, children from poor and rural communities. physical and learning difficulties...are particularly vulnerable to inter-country trafficking.” (Duncan 25) These people are targeted for human trafficking because it’s easier to have control of them due to their disability. Research indicates that violence against children with disabilities occurs at least 1.7 times greater annually than for their peers without disabilities (Disabledworld). Sometimes parents in third world countries give up their child with disabilities because they don’t have the money to take care of them. Some parents have culture beliefs that a disability is from evil or witchcraft and also give up their child. This results in the children either being sold or put into a orphanage and are exposed to the predators that could use them for trafficking.
