These days, homosexual marriage is a controversial issue that attracts numerous reactions from those advocating and those opposing. In the societal setting, the gay advocates suppose the sexual preferences of every individual should be put into serious consideration. However, many people believe that same-sex marriage basically opposes the Vietnamese traditional values and conflicts with the institution of orthodox marriage which severely leads to the children’s deprivation from their true benefits. Considering the three aspects above, this essay attempts to clarify the opponent reasons why the marriage of homosexual couples should not be legalized. Another reason for the opponent to homosexual marriage is that same-sex marriage would weaken the institution of marriage. For thousands of year, marriage has always been the union of a man and a woman that “creates kinship obligations and sharing of resources between men, women, and the children that their sexual union may produce” Doherty, W. In a couple of recent decades, traditional marriage has already been deviated with itself being adults’ desire, not the interests of society or the parental requisites of children. Allowing same-sex marriage to be included in the already-impaired definition of marriage would lead to redefining it, which no one has the right to do so, and would further disconnect its great historic task of creating the next generation for society.
