When does bullying go too far? In the novel "Tangerine," by Edward Bloor, a young teenager takes on an adventure when he discovers the secrets of his new home town, Tangerine County, Florida. Paul is legally blind, and he wants to find out, why? What happened to him? Paul has not always been wearing “coke bottle glasses”. Throughout the story Paul tries to figure out what happened to his eyes. By the end of the book, he gets his memory back, and finds out the truth. He regains his strength and is able to stand up to people and to fight for himself. Erik Fisher, Paul’s older brother makes bad choices that impact others in a big way. One of Erik’s choices is to spray paint into Paul’s eyes. When Paul was younger, Erik thought that Paul has to pay for telling on castor “I turned around to saw Vincent Castor. He was holding a can of spray paint. Then I felt Erik grab me from behind, easily pinning both my arms with just one of his. I could hear my voice crying ‘I didn’t tell! I didn’t tell!’ and I remembered Erik’s fingers prying my eyelid open, while Vincent Castor sprayed white paint on them.’” (263) Erik gets away with it because Caroline didn’t want Paul to hate Erik. It impacts Paul because he won’t be able to play soccer if the school has his IEP forms for being blind. A particularly murderous choice of Erik’s was when he told Arthur to hit Luis with a blackjack. Erik decided to do this because Luis antagonized him and said “you would smack a little kid in the face right? Why don’t you come over here and try to smack me?” so Erik to Arthur to slap him in the face, but with a blackjack. Luis died because of it, and Erik is considered a murderer. The consequences that’s Paul face is that Paul now knows another secret of Erik’s that he had to keep. Paul also got shunned by Tino and Victor because his brother killed Luis.
