Extremism is an ideology or an activity (attitude, feeling, action or strategy) that is out of the mainstream views of a community or is in violation of general ethical standards. Extremist is a derogatory and stigmatized term, and to label someone as such is to accuse him or her of holding radical views that do not hold up to scrutiny or logic. In modern day societies labeling of activities of individuals or groups as “Extremists” is always a subjective and political matter. Extremists use drastic measures to gain attention to their cause and support their various pursuits, including violence. Use of destructive strategies by them is not only because they are important in achieving their goals, but because they consider such things as legitimate. They justify what fits in their comfort zone and dismiss the rest. They favor censorship of their enemies, assassinate their character but and use intimidation and manipulation to spread their own assertions and claims. Extremism in behavior results in terrorism, crime and cruelty while extremism in belief lead to extreme attitudes, practices etc. Religious and political extremists are considered to be most violent, but not all extremists are violent, members of extremists groups might also differ in their views regarding the use of violent or non violent acts. Religious and political extremists are considered to be most violent. Extremists often have narrow viewpoint and their logical thinking is compromised and it results in poor choices and controversial acts. With the ever changing world different ways in which people can be extreme and many different types of extremism have sprung up. Ethno-national extremism, religious extremism, political extremism, environmental extremism, vigilantism etc are some examples. Ethno-national extremism, also referred to ethnic violence or ethnic terrorism, is the extremism expressly motivated by ethnic hatred or ethnic conflict. This sort of extremism takes place when ethnic groups are partially mixed: neither clearly separated enough to reduce contact nor thoroughly mixed enough to build common bonds. One thing should be kept in mind that “Nationalism” in itself is not extreme- it can be referred as focus on nation or national identity but ethno-national extremists have a particular idea of what they want the nation to be like. Their aim often means just one identity which does not include other people belonging to different colour, culture or creed living in the same society. Many theories have been put forward to explain the reasons behind ethno-national extremism but there may be divergent reasons behind such acts in societies. Generally it is agreed that ethnic extremism is a result of past tensions between ethnic groups, disputes between people of two ethnic groups, feeling of lack of security and distrust between two ethnic groups. As the past is witness to such events, ethnic extremism might result in riots or genocide on large scale. Poorly planned separations in 1947 between India and Pakistan left large heterogeneous areas in India where violence has since occurred. Gujrat riots of 2002 are such an example, which resulted in mass killings against minority Muslims. According to official sources these riots left 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus dead. The Bosnian War (1992-1995) was the first incident of genocide in Europe after the World War 2 based on ethnicity. The Serbs, Croats and Muslims were at war with each other and war left over 1,00,000 people dead. Political extremism refers to the act of pushing a political idea to its limits with the intention to confront and eliminate opposition. Political extremists have intolerance towards opposition’s views. Political extremists are classified into two types; left-wing extremists and right-wing extremists. Left-wing extremists are revolutionaries and seek to replace existing political and social order, while right-wing extremists are conservative, they focus on traditions and are status quo people. Political extremism damages the country both economically and spiritually, it has many faces and the end result is always disastrous. Political extremists always have ground to justify their extreme views which ultimately lead to taking politics as warfare by the political parties. Extremist parties often pose bedeviling challenge to democracies. Despite the adoption of democratic system by majority of nations, the 20th century has been much of a century of political extremism and extremist parties have often posed bedeviling challenge to democracies. Political extremism can also be based on one’s personality traits and childhood experiences. Hitler’s anti-Semitic movement was mostly based on his personal experience. He blamed the Jewish doctor for his mother’s death, when he grew up he was of the view that Aryan superiority was being threatened by the Jewish race. He applied extreme political concepts in world politics which originally stemmed from hi
