In any school district in the United States, bilingual education is important and should be made necessary to help children develop their language skills and understand people and their language coming from other community in a better way. The assessment goals for secondary education in the New York City District Schools will based on the advantages that students get from bilingual education. Relevance of Bilingual Education in K-12 Education Bilingual children enjoy academic advantage. Bilingual children get to enjoy academic advantage, studies on the topic of language development shows that young children get more exposure to more than one language in early age, and give them a distinctive academic advantage in their life. These bilingual children can focus more closely on the issue at hand and shun the distractions from the academic pursuits. They can demonstrate greater levels of cognitive flexibility and the ability to alter responses on the basis of circumstances and environment (Lynch, 2014). Bilingualism also improves learning ability and lifelong learning. For children to understand the full potential that multilingualism can have on learning, learning of second languages needs to start long before K-12, maybe even before K-5. The more children take advantage of basic concepts, the more they will be in tune with their brains for learning throughout life. By taking care of second language learning at early age, students can develop ability to learn new things or concepts throughout their life (Lynch, 2014). Makes collaborative learning possible. Learning two languages helps students to develop broader view of the world and people coming from different backgrounds. Learning different language from their native language helps in developing possibilities of collaborative environment.
