In Witchlanders, the character of Ryder demonstrates the leadership quality of selflessness because he put others before himself. Ryder has always dreamt of leaving his parent's border farm and going to sea, but when his father unexpectedly dies, he gives up his dream and stays at home to keep the farm going, to help support his crumbling mother and younger sisters. Despite the fact that he couldn't fulfill his dream of going overseas, Ryder never let it stop him from helping his family. Although Ryder was sad that he couldn't go overseas he would never let his mother and two sisters see because he knew that it was his job to help support them. Ryder gives up something that was very important to his father and himself just so he can make sure everything gets done before the frost. Although he struggles to deal with his mother's increasingly weird behavior as she falls deeper and deeper into her dependency on ingesting hallucinogenic flowers, he doesn't give up on trying to make her stop taking the flowers.
