The novel “Holes,” by Louis Sachar was published by the company Yearlings and contains 233 pages. It was published first on the year 1998 in Texas. “Holes” was translated in 16 different languages. The edition that I read was second edition. The reason I decided to read this book was because it was required on my reading list and because it was recommended by a friend. “Holes” won the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature in 1998. The protagonist of the novel is Stanley Yelnats. He is the newest scout in Camp Green Lake. Stanley was accused for stealing old sneakers from famous baseball player and was sent to Camp Green Lake (a camp for bad boys) as a punishment. But Stanley was innocent of the crime that he was being punished for. Stanley’s family and he believed that their whole generation was cursed because of a promise one of their ancestors made and never accomplished. Now he just always seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. But he remains hopeful despite his family’s awful luck. The boys at camp called him Caveman because he stood up to a tough guy at camp. The Warden was the owner of the camp. She is a bitter women and very cruel. She only treats people nice when she thinks she can get something out of them. The Warden actually has the boys in the camp digging holes for treasures but having them thinking that it’s to better their actions. Mr. Sir was the head counselor of the camp. He is terrified of the Warden and would accomplish anything that she would ask him to do. He was also grumpy because he has given up smoking and eats sunflower seeds to ease his cravings. Mr. Pendanski was a camp counselor. The boys called him “mom." He seemed to be friendly at fist and very caring. But he treated Zero like he wasn’t important and useless.
