The aim of this paper is to identify the significant variables, the dependent and independent variables discussed in the article written by Edward Abbey, Freedom and Wilderness, Wilderness and Freedom. It also seeks to relate between the two variables and address the critical current issues facing the society. Industrialization, which is currently at its peak amid the numerous scientific technological innovations, will be the main concern of the paper. Edward highlights on industrialization in his book and states that, “we can have wilderness without freedom, we can have wilderness without human life, but we cannot have freedom without human life and we cannot have freedom without open space beyond cities” (Edward 235). The adverse effects to the society that urbanization and industrialization have caused are evident to every keen observer. There are no longer naturally flowing fresh rivers. Wetlands, swamps, forests, thickets and meadows have all faced destruction in man’s quest to conquer the world. Edward complains that before he lived in a land where people had the entire wilderness they required, there were numerous waterfronts and marshes with wild animals like water birds, opossums, mosquitoes and muskrats (Edward 228). However, urbanization ruined all these loveable features of the land. It destroyed the natural beauty of the wilderness. Because of urbanization, the beautiful view of the skyway he loved to see was no longer there, it was instead replaced with buildings and industries that blocked the view (Edward 229). Corrective measures if invented can intervene and halt the continuing destruction. If people chose to live sustainably, they can avoid the nightmare of the human drive to conquer and expand. They can be able to preserve the wilderness for their sake and for generations to come. Edward assumes that people in a society that is democratic choose permissiveness and innovation, to support the idea of his work. Democracy to Edward is a crucial factor with significant effects to the values of the society. According to Edward, democracy has enabled American citizens to enjoy intellectual, economic and political liberty. However, he notes that this liberty can be short-lived if mechanization, urbanization, industrialization and administration continue. This freedom of permissiveness will instead only cause the continual suffering of the citizens of America (Edward 230). VARIABLES Independent variables are the elements and functions in a study whose variations determine and shape the characteristics of the dependent variable. The dependent variables on the other hand, are functions in the study influenced and shaped by the independent variables. The independent variables initiate cause and are inputs. The dependent variables are the effects and outputs of certain actions or inputs to a system (Margaret & Howard 55). A variable is a quantity or a function that keeps on changing and is subject to change. INDUSTRIALIZATION AND URBANISATION The dependent variable under study will be urbanization whereas the independent variable is industrialization. Industrialization is the process of growth of a society from rural agrarian economies to technological economies with factories, industries and commercial businesses (Wood 5). Industrialization sweeps change throughout the country. There are economic, soc
