From The Scarlet Letter, I chose Hester to write about. One of the principles I believe she lives by is respecting privacy. Hester believes everyone has a right to their privacy, everyone does not need to know everything about someone. For example when Hester is standing on the scaffold with her child and is asked to identify the father of her child, she refuses. Hester believes it is not her right to reveal who the father is, it is the responsibility of the father to step forward. Another principle she lives by is confidence, mainly confidence in herself. For example even as Hester is walking to the scaffold from prison she still holds her head high and remains in full public view without shedding a tear. She also has confidence by decorating the scarlet letter with gold thread, a color that would shine in the sun and draw attention to it, even though it is not a symbol one would want to wear. A third principle I believe she lives by is faithfulness and loyalty, she may have not been faithful or loyal to her husband but she is faithful and loyal to Dimmesdale. She shows her faithfulness to him by not revealing he is the father and her determination to keep doing so unless he wishes. Hester also lives by the principle of honesty, she shows her honesty by not denying her sin and standing on the scaffold in front of all the townspeople holding her head high. Hester also shows honesty when she told her husband, Chillingworth, she did not really love him even though she married him. She was honest and didn't believe him to believe she loved him from the start. One of the last principles I believe Hester lives by is determination and strength, she shows her determination and strength when she had the chance to take Pearl and leave with Dimmesdale to sail to Europe and pretend to have already been married and start over, but when Dimmesdale says no to this, she still stays even though people talk about her and talk down to her, and she is s
