In today’s society, discrimination is very common. Discrimination has been around for years. According to textbook discrimination is defined as actions or practices of dominant group members that have a harmful effect on members of a subordinate group. Being discriminated against can include race, sex, religion, and national origin. Discrimination in the workplace is prohibited and illegal in the United States. Age and gender are the main problems in the workplace to be discriminated against. There is Age Discrimination in Employment Act in which to prohibit age discrimination in employment. The ADEA prohibits employment discrimination against person forty years of age or older. Under this law it is unlawful to discriminate against a person because of his/ her age with respect to any term, condition, or privilege of employment, including hiring, firing, promotion, layoff, compensation, benefits, job assignment, and training. Gender discrimination is basically the same thing as any other discrimination but it is specifically concerned about women and men being treated fairly.
