The Problem and It's Background This chapter presents the introduction, conceptual framework, statement of the problems, research paradigm, hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitation and definition of terms. Introduction Reading is the primary avenue to knowledge. To advance in knowledge, one must forever learn more, study more, reason more. Reading helps to accomplish this. It is the most important task of learning, and all lessons in school need reading. As one goes up the ladder of education, one has to learn extensively in order to improve his level of achievement. This gives a better chance to one who reads well to succeed in school work, over one who cannot. A pupil who has developed the basic skills in reading through good reading habits loves to read well. He is dependent, well informed, and eventually becomes a better citizen. Having good reading practices and habits makes reading successful, thus, success in reading is success in school, and success in future life. Reading habit is one of the best characteristics that a man can possess. Once the habit of reading books grows in one, it seldom dies out. Reading habit does not necessarily mean the number of hours spent daily on reading. It also covers the kinds of reading materials that one reads as well as the reading strategies one uses. It is defined by how often students read. According to Cicero as cited by Villanueva (2008), “a man without books is a man without soul.” This is because reading plays a vital role to communication and learning. It is said that a book is one’s best friend in life. By reading a good book, one can not only learn knowledge but also gain experience in life, and realize the eternal truth. A good book can guide one in the right direction in his life’s journey. The taste of reading should be acquired early in life, because a good book refreshes one’s mind and bring immense pleasure.
