Loneliness is sadness because one has no friends or company. In Of Mice and Men there are tons of lonely characters but, the top three loneliest characters are Crooks, Candy, and Curley's wife. The uttermost companionless character is Crooks because he is black and all the ranch workers stay away from. The second lonesome character in the novel is Candy because he has no family left and he had a dog but then his dog got put down. The third rejected character is Curley's wife because she is the only girl near the ranch so she has nobody willing to talk to her. The reason why Crooks is the uttermost companionless character is because he is black. Since Crooks is black, the men on the ranch are really racist to him. Crooks has no friends or family, and so he reads because he can't socialize with anyone so he has nothing better to do. He is a complete outcast and is shut out by society. The second most desolate character is Candy because he has no friends or family left. Also Candy had only one friend left in the world and that was his dog and then his dog was put down. But he is not as lonely as Crooks because he is not an outcast. Curley's wife is the third most rejected character. Curley's wife is lonely because she has no real friends. At first Curley's wife might not look so solitary because she is so flirtatious but that proves how companionless she really is because she needs someone to socialize with. "Talkin to a bunch of bindle stiffs, a nigger an' a dum dum an a lousy ol' sheep “ and likin' it because they ain't nobody else" (p.78) The quote proves she is desperate and will talk to anybody. She has a husband but she says "Sure I got a husban'. You all s
