21 Pages 535 Words 1557 Views

Loneliness is a kind of sadness because one has no friends or company. In "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck, there are tons of lonely characters. The loneliest characters are Crooks, Candy, and Curley's Wife. The uttermost companionless character is Crooks, since all of the ranch workers stay away from him because he is black. The second most lonesome character in the novel is Candy due to his lack of family, and his dog got put down. The third rejected character is Curley's wife because she is the only girl near the ranch and she has nobody willing to talk to her. The reason why Crooks is the loneliest character is because of his skin color. Since Crooks is black, the white men on the ranch are really racist to him. They don't let him sleep in the bunkhouse or play cards with them because he's a, "Nigger." Crooks has no friends or family, and so he reads because he can't socialize with anyone and has nothing better to do. He is a complete outcast, and is shut out by society. The second most desolate character is Candy because he has no friends or family left. Candy can't be close with the men now. He has limited social and work contact with the other men since he was reduced to the role of a swamper due to his age. Additionally, Candy had only one friend left in the world, his dog. Then his dog was put down. However, Candy is not as lonely as Crooks because he is not an outcast. Curley's wife is the third most rejected character. Curley's wife is lonely because she has no real friends. At first Curley's wife might not look so solitary because she is so flirtatious but that proves how companionless she really is. Since she needs someone to socialize with, "Talkin to a bunch of bindle stiffs a nigger an' a dum dum an a lousy ol' sheep and likin' it because they ain't nobody else." The quote proves she is desperate and will talk to anybody. She has a husband but she states, "Sure I got a husban'. You all seen him. Swell guy ain't he
