The novel "Alexander the Great," by Paul Cartledge is book that thoroughly describes the life, time and achievements of this Macedonian King and conqueror that the world has heard about. Cartledge uses a variety of sources to find out everything he can about Alexanders life. He has divided the novel into separate sections that deal with a part of his live or an aspect of his character. The first 2 chapters of the novel summarizes Alexander's life and the world he was born into. His whole life is summarized in the first chapter and names, locations, and important events are introduced like his best friend and Grand Vizier Hephaestion, his home city Pella, and events like the his conquest of Persia and the death of his father. The second chapter goes through the world Alex was born into and the land that his father Philip II created for him, like the vast amount of gold and silver, exquisite military, and a Hellenistic environment. This background is essential in knowing Alexander and how he was so great. The next 5 chapters go over chunks of his life chronologically : Early Life, Alex and the Macedonians, Alex and the Greeks, Conquest of Persia and his Final Years. These chapters make up most of the novel and go into further detail the information mentioned in the first chapter. All of his battles, enemies, allies, journeys and interesting stories are mentioned here and are backed up by historical biographers of Alexander the Great. The rest of the chapters tackle an aspect of Alexander that aids to his overall image like his generalship, his divinity, him as a man and legends of this great man. Alexander the Great is a name that is known around the world and in many different languages. Many people see him as a god or the son of Zeus, others see him as Iskander or Thief in Persian. Diodorus of, Arrian, and Plutarch are all biographers of Alexander the Great and have reasserted and wrote about his life in detail in and around the 1st century BCE. Each one of them sees Alex in a different way; one as more of a coward, one as a truly great person and one as his fathers creation. Paul Cartledge, the author of the novel Alexander the Great sees and addresses many different sides of the story of Alexander and puts his personal opinion on some matters.
