Americans have been debating over the issue of universal healthcare for over a century. On several occasions, advocates of this system believed that they were on the verge of success, but each time they found out that they had failed. For many years, they have been debating on the right to health care. According to the article “Should all Americans have the right to health care”. Throughout the 18th and 19th century, US federal government did not finance or provide healthcare to the public. However, in the early 20th century, a debate over the right to health care began to emerge"(10). Other developed countries have universal health care. Many Americans would debate that it is not the responsibility of the federal government to make sure all Americans have health coverage; it should be the federal government's responsibility. In our society today, there are many families struggling through poverty and other hardships that stop them from being able to afford health care. Universal health care would play a major role and contribution to the families suffering due to unemployment, disabilities, and low-income household. Losing a job or hours should not mean the end of health coverage, but for many families, this is the case because of the cost of high health coverage. When one is laid off, one should be able to keep health insurance by utilizing a government program called, COBRA, but one has to pay his or her own premiums and 2% administrative fee. "Since so many could not afford COBRA, Congress included a COBRA premium discount in the stimulus bill. If the former employer goes out of business or stops offering group health insurance, or one fails to make the monthly premium payment, the insurance company can cancel the plan” (DeZube 1). With the universal healthcare system in place in United States, millions of uninsured, unemployed people will have an access to quality healthcare that they can afford. Most Americans suffering
