Reasons to Explore Vegetarianism

21 Pages 1534 Words 1557 Views

Vegetarianism used to be an unconventional style of living. It is becoming more frequent and accepted by culture today. There are many reasons for choosing a vegetarian diet, and in my opinion the best arguments for vegetarianism are health, environmental, and above all, ethical arguments. I think health reasons are sufficient grounds to be called the leading argument for vegetarianism. According to American Dietetic Association (ADA), it is stated clearly that we do not require meat in our diets and that it is actually healthier to avoid meat. This is because meat is high in saturated fats which are known to cause clogged arteries, and eventual heart attacks. Furthermore, consuming less meat will decrease cholesterol and lower rates of heart disease. For example, Japan had a minor threat of heart attacks before meat intake increased. Furthermore, I believe that there is also logic to humans naturally evolving to be herbivores, rather than carnivores. Human teeth resemble the teeth of other herbivores, and human intestinal tracts are long, unlike the short intestines found in carnivores. What is natural is usually healthier, and people who become vegetarians frequently report a feeling of increased energy and well-being. The best objection to the argument is when it comes to faulty health reasons of believing that a well-balanced omnivorous diet is a far healthier choice. Vegetarians who fail to supplement their diets with vitamin D, B12, B15 and calcium are becoming alarmingly anemic. Vegetarians may also lack omega-3 fatty acids. In addition, these unsaturated acids have been verified to act as anti-inflammatory agents and possibly help with depression. This shows that vegetarians are missing important ingredients to feed their body. According to Oxford University, scientists have found that 35,000 individuals aged 20 to 89 for a period of five years and discovered that vegans are 30% more likely to break a bone than their vegetarian and flesh-eating peers. Many vegetarians consume less calcium due to the constraint of their diet. The best counter to this objection is that consuming animal products may not always prove to be the best option even from a nutritional point of view. Intake of cholesterol may skyrocket as well as those of fats, depending on the variety and quality of meat that is consumed as well as the way in which it is prepared. The next best ethical argument is that animals shouldn't be slaughtered simply to mitigate our craving for a thick, tasty rib eye. The Ethics Committee on Non-Human Biotechnology, a Swiss group, argued that animals deserve respect and that killing them is morally wrong. I’ll be the first to agree that traditional slaughterhouses should be banned. The conditions within which poultry and cows are stored on animal farms
