The majority of us are free to choose our own destiny and which way we want to go in life. When growing up, you have to form your personality and find out who you are and where you belong. However, that’s not something you do overnight. In the Western world, we have many opportunities because we don't have to follow in our parent's shoes. “A Gap of Sky” is a short story written by the British narrator Anna Hope in 2008. The main character, Ellie, is walking around in the streets of London, confused about what she’s going to do, which ends up being an eye opener for her. The story is told from a third-person omniscient narrator and from the main character’s point of view but as the reader we only get to see it by her thoughts. She is constantly interrupted by her own thoughts and confusion that it’s almost impossible to understand what is going on. It is quite difficult to follow because she herself is hungover and confused. Her inner state is reflected in how it’s written. Ellie does drugs and alcohol and wakes up with clumps of yellow in her eyelashes and makeup from the night before. Also when she finds out the hall is too cold, she decides to pee in the sink instead. This shows us what kind of life she lives and that it is harsh. The reason why it is so bad for her to wake up too late, is because she has to write an essay about Virginia Woolf (stream of consciousness narrator) that is due next day and unless she wants to be kicked out of university, she has to get it done in time. Ellie is definitely not the best student and blames her parents for getting her into the course of literature in the first place (p. 2, l. 66). As Ellie walks around in the streets of London she also takes a walk in her own mind. The city setting and Ellie’s detailed descriptions plays a certain role because the reader would be able to follow her route on a map.
