Political Superpowers and the Cold War

After World War Two, all of the alliances the world had come to know had fallen apart and the only ones that remained became superpower countries. These two countries were The United States and The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). They became the strongest forces/ nations in the world. During World War Two, the two countries had found themselves working together as allies to defeat Hitler in Nazi Germany and the Axis Powers. But shortly after, many problems began to occur and a cold war between the two broke out. From the 1940’s to the early/mid 1990’s the US and USSR gathered as many allies and weapons as they could just in case of the event of a war. Although an actual war never happened, they were still both ready. It’s safe to say that the causes of this “Cold War” was the fact that both countries had different forms of government, the arms race or increase in weapons manufacturing between the two to collect the most powerful weapons to use, and lastly the fear they had for one another was also one of the causes as well as a weapon that was used for many reasons. The different forms of government were a cause of the Cold War because the United States had a capitalist government while the USSR had a communist government. And the United States did not want them to spread their communistic beliefs to other countries. The United States felt that the USSR was planning to take control of the world and spread communism throughout. Since the Russians had more power now, they felt they could go take over more countries and become an even stronger nation. Winston Churchill announced “The communist parties, which were very small in these Eastern European nations, have been raised to power far beyond their numbers and are seeking everywhere to obtain totalitarian control” (Doc 2).
