The Importance of Reading and Writing

A staff officer should be able to read, think and write in Bahasa Melayu, and it would be advantageous if they're able to do the same in English. These three abilities is the basic need to a staff officer because it helps in many aspects for them especially in decision making. The reason why the staff officer should master these three abilities will be explained in details in this essay. Other than that, I will also highlight the characteristics that should be possessed by a staff officer, in order to be recognized as a very good officer. Before I go further, I wish to explain generally about the meaning of the words "read," "think" and "write." According to Oxford Dictionary, the word "read" means, "have the ability to look at comprehend the meaning of return or printed matter." The word "think" means, "have a particular belief or idea" and lastly the word "write" means "mark in letter, words or other symbols on a surface, typically paper, with a pen, pencil or similar implement." Reading, thinking and writing are the way to gain knowledge. Reading is very important in our daily lives. Without reading, I believe that we cannot get the ideas, sources and any latest information. By reading a variety of books, it also helps the staff officer to speak and discuss about any topic with confidence. Beside that, from reading it can give the ideas for the officer in preparing the service paper or proposal paper to present to the commander. Books, magazines, newspaper, websites, articles, journals are the medium in getting information. But such information can only be retrieved by way of reading. I learnt that reading really helps me to improve my knowledge in order to share with my subordinates even more with my colleagues. I observed that reading habit has to be trained since at the small age. The parents should pay attention to train their kids to have a good hobby of reading.
