Since the beginning of time, humans have experienced a considerable amount of stress related to infidelities. Men and women are dealing with being unfaithful to one's romantic partner. Sometimes, physical attraction leads to sexual affairs, or emotional connections lead to fantasizing about someone other than one's partner. The experience of betrayal can severely damage one's self esteem, or negatively influence a person's perspective on life. Although people experience infidelities in different ways, we can assume that most of these people share similar reactions including, anger, revenge, anxiety, and psychological imbalance. In 2009, a pair of Dutch psychologists argued that unforgiving motivations following infidelity are not, necessarily, related to a negative state; that it depends on the commitment to the relationship with the unfaithful partner. Their general hypothesis stated that, associations between unforgiving motivations following infidelity, and a persons emotional states, are more extreme if the relationship is rather weak. To collect data, the psychologists posted several announcements on the internet to recruit participants. Their mean age ranked from 33 to 37 years of age; the average duration of their relationship was 5 to 10 years. Most participants had a vocational, or higher education. The vast majority were married, or cohabitating. Most participants had children. In the first study, the individuals had a heterosexual relationship in which their partner was cheating at some point in their relationship. Among the three studies, the first study was the only one in which the word infidelity was posted. Whereas, the second and third studies described their surveys as a collection of data about relationships. After the data was collected, relationship commitment, levels of unforgiving motivations, and relationship satisfaction were measured from the surveys.
