With everything going on in your life, it's difficult to focus on anyone other than yourself, right? Even if you feel that you have a valid "reason," there is no excuse for turning a blind-eye to the cruelty of bullying in school. Around the world, 1 in 6 children are bullied on a regular basis. A bully usually wants attention, and only bullies someone to feel better about themselves. The victims of the bullying can become ill, and possibly kill themselves. There are many types of bullying. One kind of bullying is emotional, while the other is physical abuse. Neither one of these is okay, and can hurt the victim. It is simple to watch someone getting teased, and shrug it off as normal; why get involved in other people's business? It's not your fault. The thing is, that it becomes your fault when you let an opportunity to help someone pass you by. In other situations, you may feel as though you did nothing to hurt someone's feelings, yet you have just by ignoring someone who feels alone. Remember one thing that you have been teased about that really hurt your feelings. Imagine coming to school, to sit in a classroom where you feel like that every single day. Don't let yourself be the one saying, "I wish I could have done something." When in reality, you could have. Suicide is currently the third leading cause of death in teenagers. Unfortunately, there are no signs of these statistics changing any time soon. The Center for Disease Control reports that in recent years, the numbers are continuing to rise. If this doesn't seem important, next time you're sitting in class, look around at everyone in the room. For every suicide completed, there are 25 more attempted. That's a lot of lives, and the numbers continuing to rise. Many high school students suffer from depression; they often feel like they are on the outside looking in.
