The United States of America is multilingual. Many immigrants go to the United States with their own language. The major language of communication in the U.S. is English, but there are many other of languages spoken. The most prevalent languages are Spanish and Russian. It's very complicated to determine if English should be the official language of the U.S. English has it's roots in the beginning of the U.S. Some descendants of English colonizers have a pretension for English to be the official language. However, Spanish speaking citizens have the same pretension, since they have an almost equal number of speakers. Historical development of the country determines what the country does. The U.S. is a country of immigrants, where different kinds of people speak many different languages. There are many establishments where people speak only Spanish, Russian, Chinese, and other languages. These people almost feel like they live in their own country. Some don't speak English, and they can't communicate to the majority of Americans. We can see some TV channels which operate in Chinese, Spanish, Russian. Some books are also printed on different languages. So these non-english speaking citizens can hear about the U.S. and its people. This language barrier makes a gap between English and non-English speakers. It is paradox when you imagine that some citizens can't understand each other because they speak different languages in the same country. U.S. government offers Green Cards to people around the world through lottery. They do so because of economic reasons. They need more tax payers in this country.
