Eighty-five percent of the 7.1 billion people in the world utilize the internet every day. Seventy-four percent of those people become addicted to social media. Social media are sites are where people can share pictures, communicate easily, blog about their day, and look up information. It has been around since the late 1960’s. The first form of social media was called the Bulletin Board System (BBS). It was an online site that let users converse with each other, and download music and games. Social media has advanced over the years. We now have sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat, and MySpace. A majority of the people that use these sites are teens and young adults. Social media websites not only uses up time, but negatively impact many teenagers’ lives. While these sites may be interesting and entertaining, it also contributes to changes in teen behaviors, attitudes, struggles in school, and effective communication. As teens become more and more enthralled with social media, their everyday attitudes and behaviors begin to change. Studies show that minors who are frequently active on social media sites are more likely to use drugs and alchohol, be more sexually active, and violent. Today it is normal for modern technology to show many forms of violence such as gun battles, riots, sniper attacks, and acts of physical violence. Users of too much social media are ninety-four percent more likely to have been in a physical fight. These acts of violence may influence children and teens to be more aggressive in everyday life. The use of social media not only leads to violent behavior, but also causes social and emotional changes. You may notice that your teenager has become much more focused on what he or she looks like. This is because, they are searching their identity, and trying to be someone that the media expects them to be. With social media, comes the stereotypical version of what a man or woman should be like. For example, women are expected to dress sexy, and have the perfect barbie doll body.
