Those who are depressed and lonely feel invisible and have no personal interactions with others and create imagery in their minds of how they really wished their life would be. When people don't have relationships with others they are starved of love and support especially as they age. Along with loneliness, comes depression and one becomes critical of others because they only see the outward side of people and not what is on the inside. Such a lonely and judgmental woman is Miss Brill in Katherine Mansfield's "Miss Brill." Miss Brill is a lonely old woman forced to the brink of despair when she realizes she is no better than those she criticizes. When one is lonely, an imaginary friend is often made up to help ease one's loneliness and depression. Miss Brill has such a friend in her fur coat. She takes loving care of it and wants it to be there for her every winter just like she needs people in her life. She is fashion worthy and she knows it, but the woman thinks her fur seems sad to her this year with little eyes saying, "What has been happening to me?" (155) when the coat is just a metaphor of what her life has become. She endures the same routine week after week not receiving the attention from others she craves while looking to her outward appearance to bring her status in hopes of recognition from others. It all makes her bitter as she critiques those around her: She glanced, sideways, at the old couple. Perhaps they would go soon. Last Sunday, too, hadn't been as interesting as usual. An Englishman and his wife, he wearing a dreadful Panama hat and she button boots. And she'd gone on the whole time about how she ought to wear spectacles; she knew she needed them; but that it was no good getting any; they'd be sure to break and they'd never keep on.
