This topic touched on the effects of human social networking. Social networking indicates the ways in which they are connected through various social familiarities ranging from casual acquaintance to close familial bonds. The term was first coined in 1954 by J. A. Barnes. In the Ted Talks video “The Hidden Influence of Social Networks,” Nicholas Christakis discusses how the behavior of one human can have a high influence on the behavior of another person even if the two people don’t know each other. Christakis' work examines the biological, psychological, sociological, and mathematical rules that show how we form these social networks, and the rules that show how they shape our lives. His work shows how obesity, smoking, emotions, ideas, germs, and altruism can spread through our social lives. His work also sheds light on how we might take advantage of an understanding of social networks to make the world a better place. Christakis speaks on certain situations where he witnessed someone’s life change because of the influence of what another person did. After listening to this lecture I realized that everyone need to choose carefully on the people that they associate with in order to have a positive life, because someone’s negativity can take over your positivity. Although some people disagree and say that someone else’s behavior can’t change another person’s life, Christakis proves his statements to be true by showing scientific and experimental proof. One aspect that Christakis touches on is the “widower effect.” The "widower effect" has received scientific attention since the 1850s (Christakis). This effect is basically dying of a broken heart. That if your spouse dies, then your chance of dying can double within that year. During Christakis’ study on this effect, he realized that this effect does not only take place between husband and wife. It also doesn't just occur between only pairs. Christakis mentioned that one of his sick patient’s daughter was getting ill from having to constantly take care of her sick mother.
