Laura Hillenbrand attains organic unity by exercising many details expressing the major themes in her novel "Unbroken." At the beginning of the novel the author expresses the main theme, which is never giving up and finding a way to keep striving forward. She expresses this theme by using literary devices such as flashbacks, foreshadowing, and irony. Hillenbrand uses a distinctive structure of elements to express how Louie fights his way through the struggles of getting what you strive for. Examples of this would be fulfilling a dream of becoming one of the best runners in the world, staying alive in the middle of the ocean on a raft, or becoming the person who you have always wanted to be. Laura Hillenbrand isolates the theme of never giving up by describing how Louie powered through the difficult challenges that lay ahead of him with multiple literary devices. Louis Silvie Zamperini, or Louie for short, endures a challenging path throughout his life. He starts off always getting in fights and stealing. One day Louie is banned from sports at his school. Aggravated by this, Louie's brother Pete brings Louie into the principles office and demands he at least run on the track team. Pete's attempt worked, Louie was going to run on the track team. Louie hated it at first, he lost his first few races, but then his brother starts training him. Once Louie got faster and stronger he realized he loved running. He ran everyday striving to be the best anyone has ever seen. This relates to the theme of never giving up because Louie wanted to become the best, and in order to do that he could not give up. Louie ended up beating his high school mile record. He started to run 4:46 and 4:42 miles, which stunned the community. He started running with college students and ended up winning the 1933 UCLA Cross Country two-mile race by more than a quarter of a mile. He traveled to New York to qualify for the Olympic Team. It was very hot, with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees. During the qualifying race many runners had to be rushed to the hospital, but Louie kept on running. He ended up tying for first, which meant he was on the Olympic Team. He traveled to Germany for the 1936 Olymp
