The Purpose of Education

Before one is born, the parents of the child must have thought of giving him an education. A few months after the child's birth, the parents would teach the child how to speak, how to walk and how to interact with things around him. When the child turns four, the parents would send him to pre-school so that he could learn the Alphabets and numbers. However, the child probably does not realize the purpose of education not until he becomes a mature adult. When he was a teenager, he would probably question the purpose of education because he thought that education would be of no use in the real world. Soon after he graduated from high school, he realized the purpose of education when he found out his dreams of becoming a doctor is unachievable if unless he gets his degree. He learned that the purpose of education is for professional development, to earn money and to gain knowledge. One of the purpose of education is to develop professional skills to prepare for workforce. "Training of the intellect, which is best for the individual himself, best enables him to discharge his duties to the society" (Newman 53). In his article, he describes how knowledge or education is related to professional skill. Skills such as critical thinking, social skills, leadership skills and writing skills are needed in order to be the best person or employee one could ever be in order to contribute to something-something that matters in one's life. For example, if curing sickness and help save lives is what matters to one's life, one needs a set of skills in order to perform this task. Skills like critical thinking and leadership skills are needed to become a doctor who saves lives. One cannot become a doctor if he does not have all the required skills. Therefore, he needs to learn these skills from education. For Example, classes like English 1A class and Physical Science 2 in Pasadena City College trains a student to think critically so that students are able to respond to things rationally.
