The Deterioration of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth

The complexity of each person can only be understood through a full analysis of one's character. But to fully understand someone you need to know about them. Throughout the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, we see Macbeth and Lady Macbeth's personalities drastically deteriorate. Macbeth is a Scottish general and the thane of Glamis. A "thane is a Scottish title of nobility, and Glamis is a village in eastern Scotland" (No Fear Shakespeare Macbeth the play plus a translation anyone can understand page ix). Macbeth is a valiant and noble warrior and stays and fights with his heart. But in his betrayal to King Duncan, under his wife's persuasion, we see his personality is severely altered. Macbeth is married to a woman of great strength and persuasion, Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth is a woman with deep ambitions and has a greed for power. Early on in the play she is insistent on Macbeth killing King Duncan and will stop at nothing to get him to do it. Lady Macbeth almost seems as if she doesn't have any guilt for any of her actions, but as her mind slowly gives away and she is left with no sleep and a ruthless and out of control husband she eventually shows us how she feels. Lady Macbeth hadn't known making Macbeth kill Duncan would effect both of them, she just wanted more power and she wanted the witches prophecies to rain true. In the beginning of the play Macbeth, Macbeth goes and visits the three witches with Banquo for a prophecy. Standing before him is three ugly women ready to reek havoc on his life. Macbeth demands a prophecy from the three witches which they gladly give him. They tell him he will be the thane of Glamis, the thane of Cawdor, and the king. After receiving these prophecies Banquo asks for one. The witches tell him he is lesser than Macbeth but also greater, he isn't as happy as Macbeth but much happier, and his descendants will be king. After this Macbeth and Banquo don't believe the witches and choose to go on with their lives. But Lady Macbeth catches wind of the prophecies and already has her mind made up that she needs to do everything in her power to get Macbeth to kill Duncan. Lady Macbeth worries that Macbeth won't have it in him to kill Duncan. "Glamis thou art, and Cawdor, and shalt be What thou art promised. Yet I do fear thy nature.It is too full o’ the milk of human kindness To catch the nearest way. Thou wouldst be great; Art not without ambition, but without The illness should attend."(Act 1 scene 5 lines 15-20) Lady Macbeth is saying that Macbeth will be what he is promised but she doesn't know if he will do whatever it takes to get the crown.
