Because of the wideness of literature, many comparisons can be found among authors and their literature. Even though different authors wrote "Jim the Boy" and "A Land More Kind than Home," comparisons can be made between characters throughout the book. Jim and Jess will be the main focus of this essay for comparison. Comparison can be found through the characters’ desires, bonds they have with others, and courage needed in the world. A comparison between Jim and Jess can be found in their desire to find their place in the world. With electricity arriving in Jim’s hometown, many changes come about. With these changes also comes Jim’s desire to find his place in this world. When the children begin to come together with the arrival of the new school, many communities are brought together. With this expansion, Jim’s perspective on the world begins to expand. He begins to gain a sense of the world and it’s vastness and complexity. Likewise, Jess takes on the responsibility of taking care of his older brother, Christopher, known as Stump throughout the book. Because Stump is deaf, Jim finds his place in the world as protecting Stump. Through Stump’s curiousness and sneakiness, Jess is thrown into adulthood. This adulthood is one in which Jess is nowhere near prepared. Both Jim and Jess desire to find their place in the chaotic world. In addition, similarities in the bonds both Jim and Jess share with those in their lives can be compared. Both Jim and Jess share comparable bonds with significant family members. Jim was born fatherless; however, his two uncles Al and Zeno daily strive to play a role as father figures for Jim. Jim’s uncles protected him, as a father figure would do, where as Jess protected Stump similar to the way Jim’s uncles strived to protect him.
