Throughout Pele’s life he had to go through the struggles of poverty with his family. The way he took his mind of this is by playing soccer by himself or with his friends. But what he didn’t know was that he would set one of the biggest soccer legacies for anyone who plays, watches, or just enjoys soccer. The topic of this project is leadership and legacies, and Pele is one of the most important leaders in soccer and has the legacy of being the best player in soccer to ever live. The definition of legacy from dictionary.com is “anything handed down from the past”. Pele’s legacy is being considered the best soccer player to ever live. He is given this legacy because he has done things during his career that people have not seen, which amazes them. Pele; Born on October 23, 1940, in Três Corações, Brazil. He first became a superstar with his extraordinary performance in the 1958 World Cup. He played professionally in Brazil for twenty years, winning three World Cups during this legendary journey. “In 1999 he was Named FIFA co-Player of the Century; he is a global ambassador for soccer and other humanitarian causes” as stated by biography.com. Those are just some of the legacies that Pele has left behind. Since Pele grew up being very poor he began developing an amazing talent for soccer by “kicking a rolled-up sock stuffed with rags around the streets of Bauru”. As a child, Pele joined a youth squad coached by former Brazilian national team player Waldemar de Brito. De Brito eventually got Pele’s family to let the growing star leave home and try out for the Santos professional soccer team when he was just 15 years old. This proves that Brazil saw something that could be big for them. He was immediately signed by the professional soccer club Santos, and started practicing with the teams regulars. “He scored his first professional goal before he even turned 16”; is according to biography.com. In his first full season with Santos he led the Brazilian league in goals and he still was not even 16. This was incredible sight to see from a teenager, because no one has ever seen this before. The world eventually found out about Pele when he played in the 1958 World cup in Sweden. “He displayed remarkable speed athleticism and field vision; the 17-year-old erupted to score three goals in a 5-2 semifinal win over France, and then netted two more in the finals, a 5-2 win over the host country”.
