My philosophy of nursing is summed up in one easy sentence; treat all patients the same way I would want my family members to be treated. This statement implies that patients must be given the best quality of care regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race, socioeconomic status, religious preference, or any poor judgement which may have resulted in their need for care. Every person deserves respect and dignity, regardless of how their views differ from my own. I view nursing as more than just a job, but as a model of care and service to others. True nursing revolves around service, and the commitment to the well being of others, prevention of illness, and to the promotion of good health. This holistic view allows me to connect with patients on a personal level, which allows me to understand the patient's values. Patient-centered care is what separates nursing from all others roles in the healthcare field. It is my belief that at the core of nursing are values that a nurse holds as part of their daily life. These values are portrayed in their relationships with their healthcare team members, and their patients. My core values consist of honesty, confidence, determination, compassion, devotion, humility, respect, accountability, and integrity. Every nurse must hold accountability as a core value. Being accountable for your actions, means that you learn and continually update yourself on current practices. It also means being responsible as a member of the medical team. The most significant value I believe that any human can have is that of integrity. It is an essential part of being a nurse. In order to care for patients, you must have integrity, be honest with others, and demonstrate trustworthiness. Integrity will radiate from you when you provide care because you will do what is right, whether or not anyone is watching.
