Catullus was born in Verona, Italy. It isn't certain which year Catullus was born. R. B. Steele, believes that he must have been born around the 80 B.C. since Catallus talks of people who were born in the same era as himself. Catullus was born in a high class family known as an equestrian, aristocratic family. He left Italy, and made a home in Rome. He traveled around Europe for his government position. Catullus was deep into politics, especially if it involved Julius Caesar, the Roman general. He was in his early twenties, when he wrote poetry. Catullus died at the age of 30. He lived a short life, even considering when he was born. “The Lesbia poems are the most known of Catullus’s works” (Puchner 941). Catullus is most known to write about love, most particularly about his supposed affair. Only 116 poems written by Catullus, survived. As with many great poets in ancient times, no one knows if the works are whole, if they are to be in a specific arrangement, or even written correctly with imperfect translations. It is Catullus' zest that brings readers from all ages to keep on reading his works. In Poem 7, Catullus writes his struggles of his relationship with Lesbia, a married woman. Physical contact is what Catullus craves for in the poem toward Lesbia. He compares the illusion of kissing Lesbia to walking in the sand of an ancient plant, used for healing. He describes his lust for Lesbia. “For an evil tongue to work you mischief” (Catullus 12); Catullus wants a witche's “evil” tongue to kiss him, and conquer his lust. Catullus’ Poem 8, is in a third person view, about his own life. He tries to give himself advice to overcome his love, and believe that he is better off without her. He gives himself a speech with taboo language, to bring down all the bad things about whom he is trying to forget. Poem 42 has been translated in many different ways.
