Arnold Friend is the personification of evil in “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” It can be agreed upon that Arnold plays the role of the devil within the story. He embodies all of the bad in society. Arnold’s character is loosely based off of real life serial killer Charles Schmid Jr. aka the “Pied Piper of Tucson”. Schmid was an adult that lured teenage girls to him, much like Arnold does and murdered them. Schmid also had a strange appearance like Arnold does in the story. Within the story, Arnold is described to have certain characteristics that would make him appear to be less than human. The narrator states “He was standing in a strange way, leaning back against the car as if he were balancing himself.” (L. 46). In many cultures it is believed that the devil is a hoofed creature. This would explain why Arnold leans against the car in such an awkward manner instead of standing straight up. The narrator also states that Arnold’s eyelashes were “thick and black as if painted with a black tar-like material.” (L. 84) Arnold is shown to have some of the devil’s manipulative ways by exclaiming “Connie, you ain’t telling the truth. This is your day set aside for a ride with me and you know it.” (L. 47). He tries to use his smoothness lure Connie into his vehicle so he can harm her. He also preys on Connie’s family situation to attract her because he knows that she’s the proverbial “black sheep” in her family by saying “they don’t know a thing about you and never did and honey you’re better than them because not a one of them would have done this for you.” (L. 158). Arnold also appeared to have a sort of psychic ability as he said “Aunt Tillie’s. Right now they’re - uh - they’re drinking. Sitting Around. There’s your sister in a blue dress, huh?
