Rene’ Descartes was named the father of modern philosophy due to much of his writing. Descartes was a philosopher and mathematician and was as well-known as the father of analytical geometry. Descartes wrote an important document called the Method of Doubt; his philosophy was based on methodical doubt. Descartes wanted to examine things which he thought to be true and set aside all the beliefs where there may be some doubt. Descartes got to the point where he doubted all his life experiences; he would doubt the world and even his own existence. Due to the way Descartes wrote and followed his own philosophy he used methodical doubt as the starting point for his philosophy. Another philosophical method is the Method of Inquiry. This method was written so you could ask yourself questions and use critical thinking to come up with ideas. This method is used for hypothesis elimination so people could come up with better hypotheses and possibly the proper outcome for these experiments. This method is different from the method of doubt because it wants you to think about the possible outcomes of situations instead of just assuming that it was not true. The purpose of Descartes’ methods is to make the reader/writer think about the questions that are being asked. The method of doubt allows the philosopher to use their imagination and think outside the box, mainly to set your mind in motion to decide if what is happening is real or not. The method of inquiry on the other hand lets you think about all the possibilities that could happen with a given situation allowing for a better outcome. These two methods allow the writer/reader to think more about what they are doing or planning on doing to come up with the best outcome as possible.
