According to Webster’s Dictionary, courage is defined as having mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. To me, this is also the perfect description of Eveningstar. This young girl has many redeeming qualities, but the one that stands out the most is her courage. On what seems like a daily basis, Eveningstar lives her life with strength to help herself and the people of her village. There are a several times in the book when Eveningstar shows her courage, but these situations stood out in my mind. The first is when Eveningstar was noticed by one of the Savages in the jungle. This Savage she calls Small was kind to her when she accidentally discovered them. He did nothing to harm her or to alarm the other men that they had been discovered. Eveningstar felt compassion for small and told her brother that Small spared her life so she wanted the safe done for him. It may not seem like much, but this girl had the courage to speak up and spare the life of an enemy because he was kind to her. I am sure that guilt played a part in her decision since Small was the person who betrayed his tribe by sparing Eveningstar’s life. Still, she had the courage to speak up and help a total stranger. With Eveningstar’s brother Smoke shell becoming a hero by capturing the Savages, and the failing health and the death of King Flint Sky God, Great Skull Zero was feeling threatened that he would likely not be chosen to become the next King. This is when Great Skull Zero devised a plan to “sacrifice” anyone he thought my actually be chosen by the God’s so he could keep the power. Smoke Shell and other men that were in support of his power, were offered to the God’s by Great Skull Zero. During the ceremony where her brother was to be sacrificed, Eveningstar spoke with courage to let the others know about the horrific plan to kill the men with power.
