Pool by Corey Cambell - Themes of Love

21 Pages 672 Words 1557 Views

This short story was written by Corey Campbell in 2009, and it has love as a main theme. Love is a nice feeling that can get you very comfortable and lets you experience a specific pleasure in your body and mind; much like a dream you don't want to wake up from. But as well as love can be fantastic it can also hurt you and that “level” of pleasure that you once experienced is now transformed into mental pain and depression. “Pool” deals with love among young couples. You will be exposed to different kind of feelings. Some feelings brings you pleasure and some don’t. The protagonist of this short story is a young girl Darla. Darla is in a relationship with a fella named Jon. For some reasons Darly is simply not happy even though she has this boyfriend Jon. Maybe she is concerned about a situation she had with Jon. John’s best friend Trevor invited Jon and Darla to his pool party once. Jon was dragging Darla to the the pool and she was not very fond of him back then because she hated other people seeing her in a swimsuit. "'Putting on your swimsuit?' Jon said. Trevor looked over at her. 'The water feels great,' he said. 'Come in and join us.' Darla reached a hand into the pool, which was warmer than she’d expected. 'A little later,' she said, knowing that she wouldn’t, that she hated others seeing her in a swimsuit” (l.58-61). I am not 100 percent sure it is this reason she is worried but I believe it could be a possibility. Apparently Darla is not happy about other people seeing her wearing just a swimsuit. Darla is also very thin and is very cautious of what she eats and drinks: “'Want a sip of my beer, Darla? Might relax you.' 'It said no alcohol.' 'One sip isn't going to do anything.' She put her hand on his wrist. The package said the success rate was 99%. It was a sure thing. And besides, she didn’t know if that one time had really been enough anyway. 'Just stop,' she said. Her throat dried up” (l.48-53). T
