The Benefits of Violent Media

From the beginning of time, violence has played a role in the development of society. Today, violence commonly manifests itself into popular media sources, such as video games, movies, literature, etc. Some assert that exposure to such violence can advocate violent behavior as well as elicit a majority of mental and emotional issues, but, in most scenarios, violent media simply serves as a form of entertainment or even a safe release for any negative emotions. Many children may mimic the behavior they witness on television or act out a scene from a video game. Though “young children who watch violent movies, including Halloween horror films, television shows or video games may be more likely to develop anxiety, sleep disorders, and aggressive and self-endangering behaviors” (Source A), most children will simply forget about the scare of a violent movie after sleeping in their parent’s bedroom for one night. “Given that normal functioning of children is an essential goal of child-rearing, parents should be aware of the types of media that may contribute to enduring fright effects in their children” (Source B) and must, therefore, elect their children’s programs carefully with the consideration that some “very young children are unable to distinguish between fantasy and reality” (Source A). If a child proves themselves incapable of differentiating the program from real life, he/she should not watch the program in question or any program, for that matter, which may negatively influence him/her in any manner. Ultimately, if the viewer can decipher between the content of the program and realism, then they simultaneously possess the mental capacity to decipher right from wrong and, therefore, cannot be influenced by the program to commit violent offenses.
