I know what you're probably thinking, “Didn't you plan on writing about skateboards?” Well I did, but a few days back I was at work reading random articles on flipboard, a news app for android, and an article about climate change sparked a number of questions. What is global warming? What does it mean? Is global warming a true threat to our beloved planet Earth? How will it impact us as humans? If it’s true, can we work together to prevent a catastrophic event? Bruce Ballenger, the author of The Curious Researcher, mentions in his book, “When you say ‘Wikipedia’ to some academics, it’s equivalent of fingernails on a blackboard.” (539) I chose this topic to steer myself away from Wikipedia and look elsewhere for facts and figures. We all remember the abnormal weather that struck the city of New Orleans in the past few months; the freak snowstorm literally shut down the city for almost three days, even though it rarely snows this far south. New Orleans isn’t the only city that witnessed record-breaking weather. States such as Georgia also experienced abnormal weather that panicked the city of Atlanta. The sudden snowstorm left thousands stranded in their cars overnight in the freezing cold. Interstates glazed with ice created havoc among drivers. The “snowpocalypse” made driving not only difficult but in many cases impossible. No one was prepared, especially the police departments of southern cities. I recall New Orleans Police scrambling around the city trying to open up safe routes and close frozen roads and car accidents still happened. I have been born and raised here in my beloved city on New Orleans and I can accurately say that this is my second time in my entire life experiencing snow down here in twenty-two years.
